The Elements of Sandwiching & Other Weekend Possibilities

Your restaurant week journey doesn’t have to end Sunday.

It’s the final weekend for Kansas City Restaurant Week, but after Sunday, you won’t have to go back to ordering things a la carte. Friday kicks off the first weekend of the fifth annual Downtown Lawrence Restaurant Week.

Restaurant week works a bit differently in Lawrence, Kansas. Some restaurants offer tasting menus, others have prix fixe (fixed-price) options, and a few have special dishes added to the regular menu.

Downtown Lawrence Restaurant Week is Friday through next Saturday, Jan. 26. The kitchen at 715 is serving chicharrones and smoked pork chile verde, The Burger Stand is making a version of poutine with its duck-fat-fries, cheese curds and duck gravy, and Ramen Bowls is making its own snowballs (the kind with coconut, marshmallow, powdered sugar and passion fruit).

If you’re looking for options in Kansas City, BLVD Tavern has a few tables on Friday night, Black Dirt has early-and-late dinner spots open on Saturday and Silo Modern Farmhouse still has reservations available for Sunday night.

The Local Pig, a butcher shop, and Pigwich, the attached sandwich operation, have moved from the East Bottoms to the City Market. The bigger space means the sandwich menu has grown (although the banh mi and cheeseburger should still be popular) and you can now get fries or chips with your sandwich, plus Pigwich will offer beer, wine and cocktails.

Only three more roast beef shops to go before Lion’s Choice can form roast beef Voltron (an ‘80s-era cartoon series that Netflix rebooted last year). The popular roast beef sandwich shop that dots the St. Louis landscape opened a second area location this week at 14189 W. 135th St. in Olathe, Kansas. The first is at 4049 Little Blue Parkway in Independence, Missouri.

If you catch a sudden whiff of butter on Saturday, don’t panic. It’s National Popcorn Day. Indigo Wild is celebrating at the local bathworks purveyor Zum Factory (3125 Wyandotte St.) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with popcorn, soda and soap.

It’s a Thursday in Kansas City, which means there are plenty of new beers on the near horizon. East Forty Brewing Co. dropped Trappe Star (a Belgian double) on Wednesday, and Two Track DIPA: Batch #2 (a double India Pale Ale) follows this Saturday. Callsign Brewing Co. will release its Citrus IPA at 4 p.m. on Friday.

The secret to a great sandwich is often the bread. Discover how to make your own baked goodness at the Culinary Center of Kansas City with Bread-Making 101 ($70) from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday. The class will teach you the essential ingredients and process, and you’ll leave with a pre-formed loaf to bake at home.
