Best Eat In The House | Manila Bay Ihaw-Ihaw’s Halo Halo
August 8, 2018 | Brad Austin, Jonathan Bender, Emily Woodring | 1 min read
Best Eat in the House features dining recommendations from people in and around Kansas City. For this episode, chef Katee McLean of Krokstrom Klubb & Market shares her love for Manila Bay Ihaw-Ihaw’s HaloHalo. We went to chef Norma Thayer’s restaurant at 4800 E. Bannister Road to learn about the Filipino dessert, which translates to “mix mix,” and features condensed milk, jellies, taro ice cream and shaved ice.
Norma and her husband Phillip Thayer opened Valley Broasters in 2015 in Grain Valley. The original restaurant served broasted chicken — fried chicken made in a pressure cooker — and traditional Filipino cuisine: pancit (rice noodles), adobo, and Halo Halo. When the Thayers moved their restaurant to Kansas City in 2016, they renamed it Manila Bay Ihaw-Ihaw and made the Filipino dishes the focus.
