Votes Are In! Here’s What We Report Next, Kansas City

Faith is at the center of discussion for a lot of folks living in Kansas City.

Flatland receives many thought-provoking questions from Kansas Citians, so we selected three on the subject of faith. On Jan. 8, we asked you to help us decide which one we investigate. Scroll down for insight on why each person chose to ask their question. As we get to work on our reporting, we hope you’ll send any tips or suggestions our way.

• What’s the difference between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Community of Christ churches? – Number of votes: 159

This question bubbled up for Valorie Wells when she attended an event at The Auditorium in Independence, Missouri. She noticed that names on some of the older churches and buildings had been changed, so she wondered whether there were differences in religious practices among the three churches.

• *What is the range of beliefs/practices within Kansas City’s Muslim community from “conservative” to more progressive or “liberal?” – Number of votes: 160 

Marian Thomas has always been inquisitive, particularly about religion. “From an early age, religious questions interested me,” she told Flatland. She’d regularly pose questions during Sunday school as a child and never stopped searching. After college, Thomas lived and worked in South Korea, where she observed and learned about shamanism, Confucianism and Buddhism. But she was curious to know more about Kansas City’s Muslim community.

• What is Jewish life like in Kansas City both now and historically? – Number of votes: 130

The person who submitted this question wished to remain anonymous. She asked about Jewish life because she said it was “difficult to live a Jewish life in the Kansas City area, Liberty to be exact.” If investigated, Flatland will look into the Jewish community’s history and contemporary life.
