City Teaming with KCP&L to Provide Free On-Street Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Downtown
August 1, 2017 | | 2 min read
Three new on-street charging stations for electric vehicles are coming online in downtown, an expansion of a program sponsored by Kansas City Power & Light.
The first station is operational at the East 9 at Pickwick Plaza apartment development at 933 McGee St. and the other two in the Crossroads District at Broadway and Southwest Boulevard are expected to be ready this Friday, according to the Kansas City Public Works Department.
“We’re proud to continue our dedication to sustainability by offering parking options for those who have electric vehicles. We have a great partner in KCP&L,” Public Works Director Sherri McIntyre said in a statement.
The three new on-street charging stations are the first to be opened outside garages and some surface lots around the Kansas City.
The charging stations provide a way for electric vehicle owners to fully charge their vehicles, with no fee. KCP&L recently reported the adoption of electric vehicles increased 95 percent after its Clean Charge Network- the largest in the nation- launched in 2015, according to the city.
This is yet another green move for the City, after a recent listing among the EPA’s 2017 list of top cities with Energy Star certified buildings.
You can find a map of electric vehicle charging stations at kcmo.gov/parking.

Kansas City is one of the leading communities in the country offering free electric charging stations.
