Breakfast Burritos & Other Weekend Possibilities

Grilled cheese. Beer. Don’t overthink it.

Cheesy Street will be parked outside New Axiom Brewing Co. (949 NE. Columbus St., Lee’s Summit, Missouri)  from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. The new brewery is now canning four-packs of beers. Keep an eye out for IPAs in cans to take home. If it’s still on tap, try Pump-Cadian Kolsch, which has a pumpkin twist.

You’ve got another breakfast burrito option, Kansas City. Martin City Coffee (131115 Holmes Road) is now open. In addition to the classic combination of chorizo, egg and cheese on house tortillas, Martin City is also serving Intelligentsia Coffee. They’ve also got a drive-thru in the works. Martin City Coffee is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Sorry. I should say you have TWO more breakfast burrito options. Shack Breakfast & Lunch (7940 W. 135th St., Overland Park, Kansas) —  an import from the St. Louis area — has opened a second Overland Park location at 7218 College Blvd. Those on a gluten-free diet will appreciate the separate menu, which includes chocolate chip pancakes and loaded skillets (eggs over hash with an avalanche of vegetables or meat).

The newly opened Crossroads Hotel (2101 Central St.) has XR (the coffee/cocktail bar that is a shorthand nod to the neighborhood), Lazia (a restaurant in the works), and a rooftop bar with a bocce court. Executive chef Remy Ayesh, formerly of Cafe Sebastienne and Repeal 18th, is at the helm of the kitchen.

XR is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the week and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the weekend. Lazia, what the hotel has called a “modern Italian steakhouse,” is expected to open in a few weeks.

Messner Bee Farm (8301 Westridge Road, Raytown, Missouri) is hosting Homegrown Holiday featuring local farmers and makers from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. A pair of food trucks, Seven Swans Creperie and Wild Way Coffee, will be on site selling sweet and savory crepes and coffee.

Make your own pie or let someone else do the heavy lifting for you. Tippin’s and The Roasterie (1204 W. 27th St.) are hosting a pie and coffee pairing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s a trio of baked pies (apple, pecan, and pumpkin) paired with select coffees.

Rye on the Plaza is hosting a Pie Dough Demo from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The class ($45), includes a pie-dough making demonstration and your own take-home pie.

Get thee to a cave. S.D. Strong Distilling (8500 NW River Park Road, #136A, Parkville, Missouri) hosts its Second Saturday tours at 1, 2, and 3 p.m. The tour of the distillery in the Parkville caves is usually a bit under an hour. Tickets are $15 and reservations are recommended.

If you want to drink above-ground or enjoy a subterranean cocktail in your own basement (I’m not on your level), Restless Spirits Distilling Co. (109 E. 19th Ave., North Kansas City, Missouri) just dropped a new cinnamon-flavored whiskey. The North Kansas City distillery infused its blended whiskey with cinnamon sticks. Dust off your crock pot. This spirit is begging to be added to warm apple cider.
