Coffee & Donuts & Other Weekend Possibilities

It’s all donuts, all the time, Kansas City. So lean into this trend and build up that winter layer of warmth a bit early. Brioche Pastry Shop (2000 Main St.) started serving fried donuts two weeks ago. They have blueberry cake donuts and apple crisp (think pie in donut form) and glazed or old fashioned sour cream.

The Dapper Doughnut (1803 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas) just opened out in the Legends. They specialize in hot mini donuts that you can adorn with toppings and then dunk in a dipping sauce, a la the Fluffer Nutter, a peanut-butter-topped donut that you can dip in marshmallow sauce. They also serve donut milkshakes. The Dapper Doughnut is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

If donuts were in a buddy cop movie, coffee would be the grizzled old partner. You really can’t have one without the other. And you don’t have to make that sacrifice at the Coffee & Donut Festival — it’s a whole celebration devoted to a breakfast tradition from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Overland Park Convention Center (6000 College Blvd., Overland Park, Kansas).  There’s donut hole putt putt, a donut bar, a donut eating contest and bloody marys or mimosas.

It’s Hatch chile season and Port Fonda (4141 Pennsylvania Ave.) is throwing its third annual Hatch Chile Festival (you need some savory with all of that sweet) from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. (yes, in the morning). Snag a fire-roasted Hatch chile or Hatch chile margarita or vodka lemonade at the outdoor bar or grab some roasted chiles to go.

Rudy’s Tenampa Taqueria opened a second location at 8710 Lackman Road in Lenexa, Kansas. Rudy’s serves fish tacos, margaritas and plenty of plate-filling burritos and fajitas. The Lenexa location is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The original Rudy’s, which has been open for two decades, is at 1611 Westport Road in Kansas City, Missouri.

KimChee (3107 Gillham Road, Suite 100) is open in Midtown. The fusion restaurant takes Korean classics and presents them in unexpected ways: bulgogi cheesesteak, Asian pork enchiladas or wasabi whipped potatoes. You can also get rice and noodle bowls, like Bibimbap. KimChee is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Betty Rae’s (412 Delaware St.) opened its second location on Wednesday. The original scoop shop (7140 Wornall Road, Suite 102) opened two years ago in Waldo and has found fans by offering unique flavors (dark chocolate and plum; buttermilk peach habanero; and goat cheese, apricot and candied walnut), ice cream sandwiches, boozy shakes, and affogatos (ice cream and espresso). The River Market location will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The Lenexa Public Market is celebrating its first anniversary with a birthday party from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday. They’ll have cupcakes and games from noon to 3 p.m. and sparklers as the sun goes down.

Bluejacket Crossing Vineyard and Winery (1969 N. 1250th Road, Eudora, Kansas) is hosting a good old-fashioned grape stomping from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. You get to roll up your pants leg (or you could just wear shorts) and help crush the grapes from the harvest. Your $8 admission, which will benefit Mindful Montessori in Lawrence, Kansas, also includes a glass of wine.
