Hand Pies, Grape Harvesting & Other Weekend Possibilities

Waldo Thai Place (8431 Wornall Road) opened this Wednesday in the former Swagger space. The restaurant run by the Liberda family, who has owned and operated several area Thai restaurants over the past two decades, has main dishes (gaeng gai, a coconut red curry, and fried rice) and shareable plates (house fried chicharrones called Buddha Chips, spicy basil wings). If you’ve got dietary restrictions, gluten-free and vegetarian options are labeled on the menu.

The Shack (7940 W. 135th St., Overland Park, Kansas) opens Friday. The breakfast spot out of the St. Louis area dishes up omelets (the Mrs. John Denver has feta cheese while I Wish I Was a Little Taller adds in horsey sauce and short ribs), skillets, bacon-wrapped meatloaf, or brioche French toast. The Shack is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Breakfast is always served, while lunch is available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday. They also offer a separate gluten-free menu.

Ever wonder how grapes are harvested? Find out at Prairie Fire Winery (20250 Hudson Ranch Road, Paxico, Kansas) on Saturday. The Kansas vineyard is asking for volunteers to help harvest grapes at 8:45 a.m. They’ll serve you lunch and sangria afterwards.

Farmers’ Markets are in full swing. The Lenexa Farmers Market (17101 W. 87th St., Lenexa, Kansas) runs from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays. While you’re there, grab peaches, wine and tomatoes. And you can then pop by the Lenexa Public Market (8750 Penrose Lane) where Sohaila’s Kitchen, which serves Indian and Pakistani fare, opened last week. On the Missouri side, the Ivanhoe Farmers’ Market (3209 Woodland Ave.) is from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Fill your basket with flowers, produce and kombucha.

Camp KC is a camper-themed event thrown by The Wild Way Coffee in the parking lot of El Torreon (3101 Gillham Plaza) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. The coffee camper will be joined by food trucks (Seven Swans will serve s’mores crepes), a mobile flower shop (Bloom KC), apparel and a photo booth.

Beer, here. Get your beer here. The Lawrence Beer Company (826 Pennsylvania St., Lawrence, Kansas) has a brewery tour from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday. You get the opportunity to see how LBC brews and sample five beers along with one full-size pour.

The Broadway Arcade (1000 Broadway Blvd.) is throwing a luau at 8 p.m. Saturday. It’ll be serving tropical drinks and hosting a limbo contest. Beach-ware is encourage.

Learn how to make Pop-Tarts and hand pies from Ann Lewis of Easy as Pie. The piemaker will be teaching a class ($45) from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Olive Tree (7044 W. 105th St., Overland Park, Kansas). Lewis will walk through making dough, rolling it out and filling it. Class participants will leave with raspberry Pop-Tarts and cherry hand pies.
