Weekend Possibilities | Playing DJ at Border Brewing, Vegan Hot Dogs and Virtual Ethnic Fest

A low-key weekend might be just what the doctor ordered before shutting the door on what may be the strangest summer ever and getting school — in some form — back in session.

You can choose from virtual events like the Ethnic Enrichment Festival or a trendy Crossroads pop-up. Of course, live music on a patio shouldn’t be too hard to come by.

Friday, Aug. 21

5 p.m. How’s your taste in music? Border Brewing Company in the Crossroads, 406 E. 18th St., is inviting music and craft beer lovers to kick the weekend off with You’re the DJ Yacht Rock Edition. All you have to do is download the Rockbot app, request some yacht rock and head to Border Brewing to see whether or not your songs are chosen and if toes are tapping. Speaking of taps, be sure to check out Border’s full list of beers online. Face Masks are required. Outside food is welcome.

6 p.m. The Kansas City Virtual EthnicFestival starts Friday evening and will run online all weekend long. Stream for free Friday, Saturday and Sunday starting at 6 p.m. for speakers, entertainers and community engagers from more than 30 ethnic groups dedicated to creating love and understanding between neighbors.

Saturday, Aug. 22

6 – 8 p.m. There will be live music Saturday night at the Iron District in North Kansas City, 1599 Iron St. Take in tunes from rock and country band Late Fees, while enjoying eats and drinks from the shipping containers turned restaurants, tiki bar and boutiques. Try the cubano from the Plantain District and thank us later.

6 – 9 p.m. KC Wineworks, 1829 McGee St., is throwing a Pop Up Party with Dead Beet Eats on its brand new patio. Pick a glass or bottle from the extensive wine list or a hard cider and then hop over to the food menu. Kansas City’s first vegan hot dog cart Dead Beet Eats is “making vegan food weird again”.

6:30 – 8 p.m. Turn back the clock Saturday evening with ’90s Night on the patio at Buffalo State Pizza, 7901 Santa Fe St. in Overland Park. Thunder Jacket plans to play a ‘90s MTV Unplugged acoustic set. The show is free, though you should definitely order some pizza.

Sunday, Aug. 23

11 a.m. – 2 p.m. The India Association of Kansas City is set to bring the flavor and colors of India to your living room with a virtual India Fest 2020. Stream Sunday morning for cultural performances, information on local entrepreneurs and much more, all focused on this year’s theme, “Faiths, Fairs and Festivals of India.”

9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Paradise Garden Club, 1621 Locust St., and Varnish + Vine are teaming up for a full day of wellness, sips, treats, live music and more. Arrive at 9 a.m. if you want to get in on yoga or hang out all day for plant caricatures by Doodle Dood, Messenger Coffee, drinks from the Guild and more. A ticket to the yoga session is $30.
