Art House | ‘No Place Like Home’ Grapples With Hate

Our relationship with wherever we choose to call home can be complicated. Just ask Kevin Willmott and C.J. Janovy, the filmmakers behind “No Place Like Home: The Struggle Against Hate in Kansas.”

“‘No Place Like Home’ is the story of people who chose to fight,” said Kevin Willmott, director of the film. “It is the story of unexpected activism of people who decided to make Kansas a better place.”

The documentary updates Janovy’s widely lauded 2018 book: “No Place Like Home: Lessons in Activism from LGBT Kansas.” It particularly highlights the struggles of LGBTQ+ people struggling to make their homes in small rural settings.

The film conveys an activist message, and a plainspoken request of viewers.

“I want them to know who they are electing to their state legislatures,” Janovy said. “I want them to pay attention to public policy and engage with their neighbors. I want them to not be afraid of things they don’t understand. I want them to speak up for what’s right, rather than being scared or not wanting to get involved.”

Watch the attached Art House video to learn more from Willmott and Janovy about the making of the film. “No Place Like Home” premieres Friday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m. on Kansas City PBS.
