Art House Extra | John McGrath Reviews ‘You Were Never Really Here’

February 21, 2020  |    |  1 min read

Awards season is over. But movies roll year round. “Art House” host John McGrath is here to help fill the cold winter months.

Despite winning the Oscar for his performance in “The Joker,” McGrath is convinced that Joaquin Phoenix’s finest work can be found in the relatively little known “You Were Never Really Here.”

The story focuses on a war veteran with PTSD who now works as a hired contractor rescuing missing girls. Not surprisingly, things get complicated.

McGrath offers kudos to director Lynne Ramsey. And he praises the work of Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, who sculpted the movie’s eery soundtrack.
