Pig & Swig & Other Weekend Possibilities
April 28, 2017 | | 3 min read
B is for barbecue. And it’s for bourbon. And it’s for bliss. Pig & Swig is Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m. in the Power & Light District. The outdoor festival features samples from Kansas City barbecue joints (Joe’s Kansas City, Plowboys BBQ, and Hawg Jaw Que & Brew, among them), as well as bourbon and beer tastings. You can also catch live acts and play yard games. Tickets are $30, while a VIP ticket, which includes entry at 2 p.m., is $65.

Attitude (600 E 31st Street) has opened in Kansas City. The breakfast and lunch spot features vintage decor and a pastry case full of bakery classics (they make their own povitica). For breakfast, you can dive into biscuits and gravy or cinnamon bread french toast. Lunch might be a meatball sub or open-faced hot roast beef. Their hours are 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
Find some garden guidance at the John Wornall House Museum (6115 Wornall Road) on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Their annual Herb & Wildflower Sale will have Master Gardeners on site along with ornamental and edible plants. The sale benefits the museum.
You can fill out the rest of your garden beds at Cornerstones of Care’s Thyme For Kids Annual Plant Sale. The sale is Friday (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and Saturday (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at Cornerstones of Care’s greenhouse (421 E 137th Street). You can snag some lemon balm, catnip, cantaloupe, watermelon, or tomato plants, as well as a host of grasses, annuals, and perennials. The proceeds from the sale help underwrite the cost of horticulture therapy programs.
If you crave salty, rather than sweet, Pretzel Boy’s is for you. The pretzel shop concept that originated in St. Louis has arrived in the Kansas City area with a newly opened, but locally owned, location at 9559 Nall Avenue in Overland Park, Kansas. It’s soft pretzels that can come wrapped around sausages or dipped in cheese, mustard, or vanilla icing (I know some of our readers have a sweet tooth).
Wanderfest is a bit of shopping, a cocktail or two, and the chance to meet local makers this Sunday from 12 to 6 p.m. The idea is for Kansas Citians to see what’s happening at 31st Street and Cherry. Pick up a map and guide at Maker Village (606 E 31st Street) or Cherry Pit Collective (604 E 31st Street) — and then discover the artists and entrepreneurs in the neighborhood. You can walk away with native plants from Green Thumb Gardens, tour Longfellow Farm, or get a cocktail from Bluestem’s Andrew Olsen.
Just like in pool, everybody is a better painter after a beer. Bricks Pub & Grub (18 SE 3rd Street, Lee’s Summit, Missouri) is hosting a Paint Your Pint Glass event on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. They’ll have the crafting supplies and specials on O’Fallon Brewery beer.
