Go All In on Gin & Other Weekend Possibilities

The Restaurant at 1900 (1900 Shawnee Mission Parkway) is now open in Mission Woods, Kansas. Chef Linda Duerr is joined by Pastry Chef Elizabeth Paradise (most recently of Story), General Manager Keith Thompson (formerly with Café Sebastienne and Corvino Supper Club) and Beverage Director Doug Frost, who was the host of “Check Please” and “Ferment Nation” for KCPT and Flatland, respectively.

For lunch, there’s a roasted beef tenderloin sandwich with Southern pimento cheese, while dinner has a Lobster Pop Tart (a leek and lobster tart) and curried shellfish stew. The scratch bar might push your boundaries — the KC Egg Cream is made with Rieger Caffe Amaro, tequila, chocolate sauce, cream and soda.

Kindly update your CPS (Coffee Positioning System). Wild Way Coffee launched its mobile coffee trailer earlier this month. The new business from Christine Clutton, a barista at Thou Mayest, is typically stationed in the parking lot of El Torreon (31st Street and Gillham Road) from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

The Foundry, attached to McCoy’s, is no more. In its place is a new concept, Sailor Jack’s Snack Shack (424 Westport Road), with a heavy emphasis on seafood and the sea. Maine lobster rolls and crab and avocado toast are served alongside the Salty Dog, a signature cocktail made with vodka, ruby red grapefruit juice and pink Himalayan salt.

If Ron Burgundy had lived in Kansas City, he might have sung about gin. Master Distiller Tom Nichol returns to town and headlines a pair of events celebrating J. Rieger & Co. Midwestern Dry Gin. The Monarch Bar (4808 Roanoke Parkway) is hosting a Gin Happy Hour from 4 to 6 p.m. with Nichol and gin cocktails. On Saturday, The Rieger (1924 Main St.) will have Nichol in as part of a Gin Brunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s a three-course menu, and you can reserve seats ahead online.

The 15th annual Parkville Microbrew Festival is from 1 to 5 p.m. at English Landing Park in Parkville, Missouri. The outdoor beer festival highlights local and regional brewers, as well as homebrewers. The festival typically attracts a few thousand people, and this year it will feature Magnolia’s on the Move and Pullman’s BBQ among the food vendors.

The Overland Park Farmers’ Market (7950 Marty St.) has kicked off its season. It’s the 36th anniversary for the market in downtown Overland Park. This is a big market with produce, meat, eggs, cheese, flowers, cinnamon rolls and gluten-free cookies. The Saturday market is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Wednesday market, which begins May 16, runs from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Still crave sweets, even if you’re no longer eating grains or gluten? The Culinary Center of Kansas City (7920 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas) is hosting a Glorious Grain-Free & Gluten-Free Dessert class from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday. The class is led by Jackie Caldwell, who will walk students through chocolate pie, nutter butter bars, coconut cookies and lemon bars. Registration is required.
