‘All These Delicate Sorrows’: Kansas City’s Holocaust Memorial

Stories of the Holocaust didn’t end with the conclusion of World War II. Those who survived an unimaginable ordeal then faced the challenge of resuming their lives with nothing.
Some made their way to Kansas City. That is the story told in “All These Delicate Sorrows,” a new Kansas City PBS documentary that will premiere at 7 p.m. on June 17. The documentary complements the traveling exhibition “Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away,” open June 14 through mid-January 2022 at Union Station.
Not all of the material could be used in the documentary. So in this extended scene, we present a detailed discussion about Kansas City’s Holocaust Memorial, dedicated in 1963, which is now situated on the campus of the Jewish Community Center.
Watch the video above to see Shelly Cline, Ph. D., historian and director of education with the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education, share the story behind the memorial.
“For many people in the community, this acts as a place that they can come to remember those that they lost, because there is no grave for the people up here who are listed,” Cline said.
