Long before we turn on the air conditioning in Kansas City, we seek other forms of sweet relief. And tops on your list should be ice cream. Since there are new treats and flavors to explore, we decided to put them all in one handy little round-up for you. Here are the five ice cream scoops you need to know. Dig in.
5. Betty Rae’s Hits the Road
In Kansas City, ice cream comes to you. Betty Rae’s Ice Cream (7140 Wornall Road), which recently celebrated its first anniversary, has added a food truck into the mix.
“Being on four wheels made more sense than investing in another shop,” said Betty Rae’s co-owner David Friesen.
The truck will offer scoops — there’s a case that’s visible from the order window — and is out rolling now.
4. Make the Dessert Course Tequila
Dos De Oros Taqueria (650 E Blue Ridge Boulevard) dishes up house ice cream alongside their carne asada tacos. Margarita fans might consider taking the plunge with tequila ice cream, a different take on a familiar spirit.

3. Head to Main Street for Glace
After more than five years, Glace Artisan Ice Cream has closed in Leawood (4535 W 119th Street). On March 31, chocolatier and ice cream maker Christopher Elbow decided to close the location at 119th Street because the rent renewal rate was too high. Elbow explained that he is actively scouting new locations. The Glace shop at 4960 Main Street is still open.
2. New Take on an Old School Classic
Children get books at bed time. You? You’re a viking that needs a cocktail and an ice cream sandwich before you lay your head on the pillow. The Corvino Supper Club & Tasting Room (1830 Walnut Street) has a fat ice cream sandwich featuring house mint ice cream stuffed between a pair of chocolate cookies. It’s on their late night menu, available from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.
1. Westport has a New Scoop Shop
Westport Ice Cream Bakery (4120 Pennsylvania Avenue, Suite #14) is open. While the scoop shop has retained much of the equipment used by Murray’s Ice Cream & Cookies, the ownership and flavors in the case are completely new. In addition to ice cream, they’re serving up Italian ice, tiramisu, and have already partnered with Doughnut Lounge to create an ice cream donut sandwich. Beginning May 13, they’ll be open seven days a week.
