Browne’s Irish Street Faire & Other Weekend Possibilities

Browne’s Irish Market (3300 Pennsylvania Ave.) is hosting an Irish Street Faire from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday. The festival will feature performances by The Elders and Eddie Delahunt, as well as an Irish whiskey tent and Browne’s Reubens. Tickets are $20 (free admission for those under 12 years old).

Good things happen when you work together. Double Shift Brewing Company (412 E. 18th St.) collaborated with The Kansas City Star’s Sam Mellinger to make a beer. Citrus Farm Belgian IPA — a brew made with five kinds of hops, flaked oats and wheat — will be released at 4 p.m. Friday at the Crossroads brewery.

Casual Animal’s (1725 McGee St.) latest beer for a cause is Local Motive Fruit Ale. The fruit in the fruit ale is passionfruit and pineapple, and it will be on tap through July 1. Casual Animal will donate $2 to After The Harvest for each pint sold.

Finding gluten-free desserts that feel indulgent can be a challenge. The Lenexa Public Market (8750 Penrose Lane, Lenexa, Kansas) is offering a Gluten-Free French Desserts Cooking Class from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Pastry chef Nora Kaschube, a graduate of the French Pastry School in Chicago, will lead the class ($35) that teaches students how to make petit fours (meringues and salted caramels).

When it comes to pairings, you might consider a glass of wine and the sunset. Nighthawk Winery’s (16381 W. 343rd St., Paola, Kansas) Sunset Saturday series returns this Saturday. The dinner, which runs from 5 to 8 p.m., is braised lamb, couscous, and a Black Forest brownie. Wine or sangria is also available for purchase.

Restless Spirits (109 E. 18th Ave., North Kansas City, Missouri) has a new take on its gin. Builders Gin, currently served at Kauffman Stadium, was placed in barrels which previously held malt whiskey and blueberry pomegranate cider. Master Distiller Benay Shannon lets the spirit rest in the barrels to pick up notes that would compliment the botanicals in her gin recipe. The Barrel-Finished Builders Gin is available only in the tasting room at the distillery.

Fannie’s African Cuisine (4105 Troost Ave.) recently opened. Chef Fannie Gibson, who is originally from Liberia, cooks traditional West African cuisine: puff puff (deep-fried dough), jollof rice, peanut butter soup, and fried plantains. Fannie’s serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Just a short walk or ride from Fannie’s is the newly opened Mac’s Fish & More (6200 Troost Ave.). Mac’s serves fried fish, wings and burgers in the former Mad Jack’s on Troost space. The new eatery is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Bank of America’s Celebration at The Station is set for this Sunday at Union Station. The free performance from the Kansas City Symphony honoring veterans will be broadcast on Kansas City PBS and 90.9 The Bridge, and is followed by a fireworks show set to Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. You can snag a seat starting at 3 p.m., while the concert begins at 8 p.m.
