13th Annual Troost Festival & Other Weekend Possibilities

The 13th annual Troost Festival is Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The free festival, put on by the Troost Village Community Association at 31st and Troost, has vendors, kid’s activities, and plenty to eat (JC Popcorn, Jerusalem Cafe, among them). The stage lineup includes dance troupes and musical acts.
Forget glass, Cinderella should have been after those cheese slippers. Fervere’s Cheese Slipper Saturdays returns this Saturday at 6 p.m. The line up usually gets started before then outside the West Side bakery at 1702 Summit as folks wait for the warm cheese-covered ciabatta — the toppings rotate during the summer — to come out of the oven.

You can’t just go cold turkey on eating turkey legs. The 32nd annual Merriam Turkey Creek Festival understands your plight and they’ve got turkey legs, fried pickles, and a pancake breakfast. The annual outdoor festival with live musical acts, a petting zoo, and crafts, is Saturday at Antioch Park (6501 Antioch Park, Merriam, Kansas).
Beer and barbecue are our peanut butter and jelly. Brew-B-Que will have local barbecue trucks battle it out for supremacy while attendees sample beer from more than 40 local and regional breweries. The barbecue challenge is Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. on the grounds of the Kansas City Renaissance Festival (628 N 126th Street, Bonner Springs, Kansas). General admission tickets are $40 (which includes only beer samples), while the VIP package ($55) gets you both beer and barbecue.
Don’t slave over a hot grill. You’ve got plenty of time to do that this summer. Brookside Wine & Spirits (600 E 63rd Street) is hosting a free beer and charcuterie sampling with Broadway Butcher Shop on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.
Step up your bar game with a Mixology Class taught by Ryan Rama at Libations & Company (23 SE 3rd Street, Lee’s Summit, Missouri). The new barware shop is hosting two hour-long classes at 7 and 8 p.m. Saturday. Learn to make tequila and rum drinks. The class costs $10.
Drinkers are like zombies, there is never just one. So learn how to satisfy the thirsty hordes with a Spirit Lesson: Summer Punches and Batched Cocktails at Lifted Spirits Distillery (1734 Cherry Street) on Sunday from 4 to 5 p.m. The free class will be followed by a tour of the distillery.
