Cook for Courage and Other Weekend Possibilities

You win when chefs compete in a barbecue contest. The third-annual Cook for Courage, a benefit for the Child Protection Center, is Sunday at 6 p.m. at the 12th Street Bridge in the West Bottoms. Chefs Colby Garrelts, John Smith, Dan Swinney, Alex Pope and Laura Norris will all be smoking to see who has the best ribs. There will be live music by Drew Six and a panel of celebrity judges, including the Chiefs’ Alex Smith. Tickets are $100.

If you feel like you should be doing more drinking with your dog, the Nelson-Atkins Young Friends of Art have you covered. Puppies & Pints is tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Nelson (4525 Oak St.). It’s happy hour on the East Sculpture Terrace (dogs are not allowed inside the museum).

Discover the Missouri wine scene at the Weston WineFest on Saturday from 12 to 7 p.m. Pirtle Winery (502 Spring St., Weston) is hosting seven other wineries. Tickets are $25 and include a souvenir wine glass and tastings.

Ever thought about planting fruit trees? Discover whether you’re cut out to create your own mini orchard with The Fundamentals of Fruit Trees and Berry Bushes at the Kansas City Public Library’s Irene H. Ruiz Branch (2017 W. Pennway St.) on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The Giving Grove horticulturist Matt Bunch will lead the session, which will cover how to select, plant and care for fruit trees. It’s free.

A little bit of afternoon tea is a nice way to unwind after a long week. Nancy Schneider of Headrush Roasters is hosting an afternoon tea at the Atkins-Johnson Farm and Museum (6607 N.E. Antioch Road, Gladstone) on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. Tickets are $15 and include tea from Headrush, alongside treats from the Laughing Place Bakery. We all like to color. Grab coloring pages for the whole family, listen to live tunes and watch Donald Ross Scribe paint at Mo Brew’s Soulful Sundays. The monthly event at 1403 W. 39th St. is intentionally family-friendly; it gives parents a chance to create a bit of art and have a beer or two.

Hamburger Mary’s (3700 Broadway, Suite 110) is hosting a watch party on Sunday at 8 p.m. The Kansas City location was featured on “Undercover Boss” (wherein a CEO goes “undercover” to learn more about a company and its employees).
